Canadian Yearly Meeting is on its way and CYFYM Nominating Committee is hoping to have a head start this year. All in all, we’re in good shape, but there are a number of positions that we are looking to fill. All position terms are 2 years in length (those nominated this year will serve until the rise of meeting in 2016). Here is the list:
Young Adult Friend Clerk
Education and Outreach Representative
Want to know more about these positions? Get in touch with for more info, to get a better sense of what’s involved in each position, or to talk to the Young Friends currently serving in each position.
The next issue of Sporadical (Young Friends’ newsletter/publication/e-zine) is getting underway, and the coordinators need content relating to militarism in Canada. Sporadical is produced by Young Friends, so get involved! (No prior experience necessary.)
Under 35? Get yourself to CYM this summer and be part of the 2014 Youth Challenge!
In 2012 Canadian Young Friends Yearly Meeting received $25,000 to bring together Young Friends and Young Adult Friends at CYM 2013. The 2013 Youth Challenge was a great success, bringing together 45 Friends between the ages of 13 and 35 and fostering deeper connections in the Young Friend and Young Adult Friend community from coast to coast. A substantial amount of the funding is still available for use in 2014. As funding can be a major barrier to attending, we’re incredibly excited to be able to help YFs and YAFs come together from across the country in Winnipeg, Manitoba this August 9th-16th. Read the 2013 CYFYM Epistle online and see what it’s all about!
Young Friends are typically defined as being at least 12 or 13, but the Youth Challenge may be able to fund younger Friends as well, particularly if they are the children of Young Adult Friends also attending CYM. All applicants should write their own applications.
What can we expect to experience as part of the Youth Challenge?
We’re excited to bring a critical mass of Young Friends and Young Adult Friends together to energize and strengthen our community and rejoice in our time together in worship, play, and good conversation. We hope to rejuvenate Canadian Young Friends Yearly Meeting and discern our collective path forward, asking what we want to be doing and what makes sense for us as a Yearly Meeting. Planning is well under way for exciting and enriching programming for both YFs and YAFs!
How does the funding work? Who’s eligible?
CYM’s Education and Outreach Committee will allocate funds to applicants on a first-come first-served basis, taking into account financial need and desire to attend CYM. Anyone under 35 with a connection to the Religious Society of Friends is eligible–first time CYM attenders are encouraged! The maximum amount per person will be $750 unless there are extenuating circumstances which would require a larger amount (e.g. needing to take along small children).
How do I apply?
You can apply online by filling out the application form or you can download the applicationand submit it by email to. A Minute from your Monthly Meeting in support of your attendance at CYM is encouraged but not required, as we understand that not all Young Friends have a strong connection to a Monthly Meeting. Asking a Monthly Meeting for additional financial support is also encouraged. If you prefer, you may submit a supporting letter from a Friend who is connected to Canadian Yearly Meeting or someone from Camp NeeKauNis or someone from a Half-Yearly Meeting or a worship group in support of your application.
